Het is maar even

From Luuk, Amsterdam-Oost2 min read2 min listen

Every Sunday at ten o'clock my neighbour Ferry drills a hole in the wall. Not around ten. At ten. I checked it once with the clock on my phone, and he was three seconds early.

I have lived in Amsterdam-Oost for eight years now and I have had a lot of neighbours. A man who played the trumpet at night. A couple who only argued in French, so I could not follow it. But nobody was as loyal as Ferry and his drill.

Over zondagsrust. Over respect.

Last week I finally rang his doorbell. I had prepared a whole speech, in my head, in the shower. About Sunday rest. About respect. About how on Sundays I drink my coffee on the balcony and want to hear nothing, except the seagulls.

Ferry opened the door in orange tracksuit bottoms. There was dust in his eyebrows. Before I could say anything, he said: "Ah, Luuk. I'm almost done. It's just for a moment."

Maar even.

Just for a moment. There I stood, with my whole speech, and I had nothing left. Because what do you say to "even"?

"Heel even" betekent: een half uur, minstens.

Dutch people use that word for everything that is actually too big. "Mag ik even iets vragen?" means: I am going to ask you something you would rather not hear. "Ik bel je even terug" means: maybe tomorrow. "Heel even" means: half an hour, at least. It is a word that makes things smaller, so that you cannot say no to them.

Dus zei ik: "Oké. Even dan." En ik ging weer naar binnen.

So I said: "Okay. Just for a moment, then." And I went back inside.

Groet, Ferry."

Yesterday there was a plank on my doormat. Beautiful wood, sanded smooth, with a note on it: "For your records. I hear them through the wall. Ramses sounds better when he is not standing on the floor. Regards, Ferry."

As you read this, I am putting up that plank. With his drill. At ten o'clock sharp. It's just for a moment.
